Thanksgiving Pies
Happy Thanksgiving! We were lucky enough to be invited to Patrick's aunt's house (in SW Portland) for dinner, which allowed me to focus my energy solely on dessert. I made the latest Cook's Illustrated pumpkin pie recipe and Damn Fine Apple Pie from In the Sweet Kitchen, both using Shuna's all-butter pie dough. I also made vanilla bean ice cream from The Perfect Scoop.

I was really happy with everything. I had made the apple pie a couple times before. This time I used four or five kinds of apples (whatever looked good at the farmers' market), predominantly Rome and Empire, I think. This was my first time trying the pumpkin pie recipe, and even though I baked it about 20 minutes longer than specified, it still turned out a little soft in the middle. Plus my crust shrank and disappeared under the filling. But it was still really yummy, so I don't mind. I'll definitely make it again in the future.
Let me indulge in just a few more pie glamour shots. Oh big sugar, you make things so beautiful!

I'm looking forward to having pie for breakfast tomorrow :) I hope you all had a happy Thanksgiving!
